Reroof vs. Re-roof

Building permit glossary · Updated June 11, 2026

"Reroof" and "re-roof" are two spellings of the same work: replacing or recovering an existing roof. Jurisdictions are wildly inconsistent about it — you will see REROOF, RE-ROOF, RE ROOF, ROOF REPLACEMENT, ROOFING, and free-text descriptions, sometimes within the same city's feed.

This inconsistency is exactly the problem permit classification solves. Rather than make you guess every local spelling, PermitStack's classifier reads the raw permit type and description and maps all of these variants into a single ROOFING category — 2.4M permits and counting. So a search for roof-replacement dates is one query, not a regex against a dozen spellings. This is the core reason permit-derived roof age works as a clean, queryable signal. See roofing permit data and roofing permit.
