Terms of Service

Last updated: August 13, 2026

1. Acceptance

By using the PermitStack API or website, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

2. Service Description

PermitStack provides a REST API for searching and retrieving publicly available U.S. building permit data. Data is aggregated from official city and county open data portals and is provided as-is.

3. API Keys and Accounts

You are responsible for keeping your API key secure. Do not share your key publicly or embed it in client-side code. One account per person or organization. We reserve the right to revoke keys that violate these terms or abuse the service.

4. Acceptable Use

You may use the API for any lawful purpose, including commercial applications. You may not:

4.1 What you may do with results

The restrictions above are about redistributing our dataset, not about how you use results inside your own product. To be explicit, and without narrowing anything above:

"Bulk-download the entire database" is about scope, not volume. Querying the jurisdictions your product serves is normal use, however many calls that takes, subject only to the rate limits in section 5. What the clause prohibits is systematically acquiring our full coverage in order to stand up a copy of it. If you want complete data for particular jurisdictions, that is what the per-city Data Exports are for, and buying one is expressly permitted rather than a workaround.

Data Export files carry these same terms. There is no separate export licence, and each export ships a plain-language licence statement in its MANIFEST.txt. Note that exports contain public permit fields only and never contain property-owner names or mailing addresses.

Underlying permit records originate from public government sources. These terms govern our service and the compiled, normalised and classified dataset we provide, not the underlying public facts. If your use case is not clearly covered here, ask us at support@permit-stack.com and we will answer plainly.

5. Rate Limits and Quotas

Each pricing tier includes specific rate limits and daily quotas. Exceeding these limits will result in HTTP 429 responses. Persistent abuse may result in key revocation.

6. Data Accuracy

PermitStack aggregates data from public government sources. While we strive for accuracy, we make no guarantees about the completeness, timeliness, or accuracy of the data. The data should not be used as the sole basis for legal, financial, or safety decisions.

7. Pricing and Billing

Free tier usage requires no payment. Paid plans are billed monthly or annually through Stripe (annual: indie $290, hobbyist $390, developer $790, Business $1,490). You may cancel at any time; your plan will remain active until the end of the billing period. Refunds are handled on a case-by-case basis.

8. Limitation of Liability

PermitStack is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind. We are not liable for any damages arising from use of the service, including lost profits, data loss, or business interruption. Our total liability is limited to the amount you paid for the service in the 12 months preceding the claim.

9. Modifications

We may update these terms at any time. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance. Material changes will be communicated via email to registered users.

10. Termination

We may suspend or terminate access for violation of these terms. You may terminate your account at any time by contacting us.
